Before I write many of these posts I do alot of reading in advance. I do this to bring myself up to speed on the topic at hand or to brainstorm new ideas or to find useful tidbits that I hope are interesting and relevant, etc.
These days, like most everyone else, I use the internet when I want information.
When it comes to financial planning, retirement planning, IRA’s (both Roth and Traditional) there’s quite a bit of good information on the web… but it takes a while to find exactly what you’re looking for, its like going on a virtual scavenger hunt.
Along those lines, here’s a couple excellent sites that offer advice on personal finances and planning for retirement if you get tired of listening to me… http://www.kiplinger.com and http://www.fool.com.
Outdated
But at the same time, I’m taken aback by how outdated some of the pieces on the internet are, many of which have not been updated to reflect alot of the current changes.
For example, today I was reading an article on Roth conversions and one paragraph into the article I realize the contribution amount being talked about is completely outdated and the applicable tax laws have changed.
I look to the top (or bottom) of the piece and see it was written in 2001, now this can be problematic to a less discerning eye.
I’m not sure if it’s the author’s fault for not updating things or the search engine for keeping it indexed, but I plan on avoiding those kind of problems. I want to keep things at this site fresh and in use, like a plush, well maintained lawn.
A financial planning resource
The main reason I started this blog, in the first place, was to create a resource where GenXer’s could get good, timely information on financial planning issues that are affecting them at this point in their lives; without them spending hours looking for it.
I mean you have this huge demographic (Americans in their 30’s and 40’s) that are in a critical phase of their financial development and there’s no one paying attention or urging them on. Kinda reminds me of the neglected toys on ‘Misfit Island’ from the old Christmas specials… no one wanted anything to do with them:(
So I built a profile in my mind of who needs what information, what kind of information they need and then I began to write…
