Originally, I knew very little about the blogging world. I mean, I knew what blogging was about but had little idea how extensive and influential the blogosphere is.
Around the middle of June, I was in Las Vegas with a few friends and got into a conversation with a friend of a friend.
He was an online marketing consultant, heavy into social media, and was telling me all about the world of online blogging and how powerful a medium it can be.
A real newbie
I was intrigued by it all. I had had this idea of “financial planning for my generation”on my mind for quite some time now, but didn’t know how and where to get the word out. The medium, it turns out, was right in front of me the whole time, but it took this conversation in Vegas to turn the lights on. Who says you can’t get lucky in Las Vegas?
So, I came home and decided to immerse myself in all things blogging. I read and read and read til the point where my eyes were hurting all the time. Trying to balance work, with my new interest was keeping me up late and getting little sleep. Even when I tried to sleep I couldn’t, I’d have so many ideas running through my head.
I just really wanted to get a good feel for what blogging was all about before putting pen to paper (or finger to key:) So after about three and a half weeks of 18 hour days, I penned my first post and I haven’t looked back.
Just getting started
It’s really still so early and things here are constantly evolving. One of the biggest challenges for me, is the technical aspect of the whole project. I actually have some experience with search engine optimization, so I had an idea what I wanted things to look like, but getting them to look that way is a completely different story. I really don’t have much of a clue when it comes to computer programming and design.
One thing I realized long ago is if you not good at something, its better to find someone that knows what they are doing, instead of spending hours trying to do it yourself. After deciding on using WordPress, I went through 100’s of themes but couldn’t find one I liked. I decided to hire someone to customize it for me. I did some research and was lucky to come across Jennifer Zelasny at SDAC Inc. to customize my blog theme.
She’s done a great job for me. Much like I do for my clients, she was able to quickly customize a theme based on what I wanted, although I’m constantly thinking about new widgets to add or tweaking the layout.
Changing my mind
In fact, over the last day or two, I’ve been thinking I may need to add another column because I don’t want visitors to have to scroll forever, in order to find something. Well, I’ll take that up with Jen.
BTW, I hope you like the colors, they are there for a reason, but like everything else, I’m debating about changing them too…
