Labor Day memories

US OpenWell I’m back to the blog after a few days of R&R for the Labor Day weekend. Been relaxing and watching the US Open Tennis, loving the matches and the great coverage on USA and CBS, always one of my favorite times of year in NYC. Tonight on USA is Roger Federer vs Andy Roddick in prime-time, I can’t wait. Hopefully Andy will give him more of a challenge then he did at the Australian Open in January.

This time of year brings back special memories for me, as I grew up playing tennis at the USTA National Tennis Center. I ball-boyed the Open for many years, alongside my tennis friends, many of whom I’ve lost touch with. I ball-boyed the Womens doubles final where Steffi Graf and Gabriella Sabatini won the title that year.

Back in the day

I ball-boyed a Mens quarterfinal between Jimmy Connors and Brad Gilbert, I ball-boyed for Boris Becker on a few occasions and everyone thought I looked just like him; I used to take photos with fans who thought I was him, pretty funny.

I remember being so excited before the Open began and more and more dejected as it drew to a close. You could feel the night air turning cold at Flushing Meadows and knew another summer had passed. The kids were all going back to school and Fall was in the air.

As a boy, I’d always get sad because I knew the endless days of summer were somehow ending. As an adult, I look forward to getting the sweaters out, no longer having to sleep with the air conditioning, waiting for the leaves to change and maybe a re-invigorated stock market.

This year I only went to one live session at Flushing Meadows, alot less than I’ve gone in years past. I saw Maria Sharapova lose and watched Roger Federer dismantle John Isner after playing a shaky first set. He’s so incredible to watch, its almost not like watching tennis for me. I played competitive tennis at a pretty high level so I can really appreciate what Roger brings to the table.

When he’s playing well it’s like watching a form of expressionist art being performed right in front of you. It couldn’t have been much different than watching Van Gogh, Picasso or Beethoven in motion. I predict Roger is going to win his 12th grand slam title and get that much closer (in total slam wins) to his new friend Tiger Woods.

Now on a more blog related note…

A big part of the reason I have been posting less frequently, in the last 2 weeks, is due in part, to technical difficulties. I am currently spending alot of time trying to clean up the blog and find someone with the technical skills to make this blog into something more appealing.

The more I write without fixing the internal linking structure, keywords, images, photos, title descriptions etc. the messier things are getting. Until I remedy this situation, the posts will be a little less frequent.

Fall is definitely in the air today, I love that…
