Taking Stock of my Tag Cloud and the Future

I was just reading a post over on Moolanomy called Transforming Goals Into Action. It got me to thinking about my goals for this weblog, what I’ve accomplished to date, and where I’d like to be a year from now.
I started by looking at my tag cloud in the right column of this blog (which is a reflection of the topics I’ve posted on most frequently) and noticed that the big bold goes to topics like: Psychology behind Financial Planning, Financial Planning and Retirement and Mutual Funds. And that’s fine because those are all topics that are very important.
To a lesser degree you’ll see other favorite categories like ETF, the Roth IRA and ‘Down Home’ Financial Calculators. Originally, I would have thought these topics would have been the ones most bolded in my tag cloud, but that hasn’t been the case to date.
I think I’ve written more about the former topics so far (as opposed to the latter) because I’m interested in building out the so called ‘foundation of this blog’ before starting to show readers how to apply it all to their unique situations.
Looking to the cloud for answers
So, what is my current tag cloud telling me???
Here’s what it says to me… It says I have a lot of work to do! This blog is very much a work in progress and a year from now, I’d be willing to bet that the tag cloud will look markedly different.
In the ‘About’ widget I say, ‘There’s a heavy focus on all things Roth IRA, with special attention given to the upcoming 2010 Roth conversion event using ‘down home’ financial planning tools.‘
To date, I haven’t focused as much on these topics as I would have liked to. I am constantly working to deliver on that promise but this all takes time. I predict, as the new year rolls around, that I will start to focus more and more on these core topics.
Seamlessly bringing all the pieces together
I was watching Megabuilders on the Discovery channel recently and the show detailed the construction of the Rio Antirio bridge in Greece. The project began in 1998 and finished a week before the Athens Olympics began (summer 2004).
For the longest time it was just a bunch of different, unrecognizable parts that made up the foundation for the bridge. And slowly but surely everything was tied in to form one of the most breath taking structures ever built. To a much lesser degree, I’m taking the same approach to building this blog:)
Current state of affairs
For now this blog is like a bunch of puzzle pieces sitting on the table top. As winter passes and Spring and Summer arrive, I believe all these pieces will start to fall into place and a clearer picture will begin to emerge.
For me, having the tag cloud over there is a constant reminder of where I need to go in the future and I’m excited about the prospects of delivering on all that.
The immediate future
Next week, I’m going to strengthen the foundation a bit more by focusing on the beauty of ETF’s. So when I finally get around to showing GenXer’s how to prepare for the future, it’s going to be easy for readers to find the ammunition that will allow that gun to fire…
