OK a little late on this post, kind of like everything else this week. Writing this right in the middle of the Oscars; as I write this they are performing one of those musical numbers.
First things first, I’d like to announce that I am now a proud member of The Life-Skills Network. I look forward to everything that will come from this collaboration and am honored to be associated with such great blogs and talented writers. (More on TLSN coming soon!)
Here are my favorite articles from the past week, straight from my StumbleUpon page:
Investing
Is the market safe? - The last paragraph in this post caught my eye. From 1985 to 2004, mutual funds returned 12.1%, while investors averaged 3.7%. In my blog I talk about the value a good financial advisor can add to relationships, this is where they really help…
Opportunistic Re-balancing: A portfolio re-balancing strategy that times the market - I think portfolio re-balancing is second only to diversification in importance. I like the idea of opportunistic re-balancing. Some of the snags with this system (mentioned in the article) are easily overcome by working with a trusted advisor…
Stocks and Blondes… Japanese Women Style Their Hair to Suit the Times - I’m a big fan of anecdotal evidence… this article claims that the length of Japanese women’s hair is ‘eerily’ correct in predicting the movements of the Japanese stock market over the past 20 years…
What if you invest on the wrong day? - It’s amazing the difference only one day can make when it comes to investment performance. Check out the difference between an investment made on 10/13/87 and an investment made 5 days later on 10/19/87…
Financial Planning
Teach Your Kids About Money with Only 4 Quarters - A great way to teach kids about money, in a manner they can understand. More and more parents should not only have ‘The Talk’ but ‘this talk’, as well. I think you will see (as our economy falters) more and more people become fiscally responsible, turn to frugal living, and pass those teachings on to their children at an early age. There’s the silver lining…
Do You or Your Loved Ones Need Insurance for Long Term Care? Although this is a growing problem in our country (since people are living longer), it’s not something that needs to be at the front of your TO DO list if you are just starting a family. I think your late 40’s-early 50’s or when you can afford it (after absorbing more vital costs) is when you need to look into it. If you have parents above these ages, get on it for them immediately…
Self Improvement
Have You Ever Been Interrupted - I think I have interesting things to say (sometimes) and find people often tuning me out after a few sentences. At first I thought it was me, but realize it’s them! (btw - I’m part of them too) There’s some great tips here and I plan to apply much of it…
Magic Eight Ball for Positive Thinking - We can learn a lot from kids. Jeff details what he learned from his daughter’s Magic Eight Ball and how you can apply it to you’re daily routines…

One of my earliest New Wave memories, man this takes me back!
It’s a wrap
And that’s it for this week. The Academy Awards just ended and it looks like the big winner was ‘No Country For Old Men.’ I haven’t seen it yet, maybe sometime later this week.

Thanks for the mention, Ciaran! I missed the Oscar’s last night (intentionally), but based on the water cooler discussion this morning I might should have watched them. You know, the whole cultural literacy thing.
