About business me

business_me_1.jpgI got started in this business in 1994. I took my Series 7 exam on St. Patrick’s Day of 1995; with a name like mine that had to be a good omen.

Needless to say, Irish eyes were smiling and I passed with flying colors. In 1995 the investment business was all about cold calling and pitching stocks over the phone. Thank God that didn’t last much longer because I would have left the business, it just didn’t make sense to me, communicating with your clients that way.

I went on to work for Bear Stearns in their institutional trading program and realized the corporate side was not my cup of tea either. I’m a man of the people. From there, I went to (CIS) Citicorp Investment Services, where I was a financial consultant to the clients of my bank branch in Whitestone, NY. This is where I realized what I wanted to do.

In my first year in “the chair” I exceeded my sales goals and was lucky enough to qualify for their top sales trip to Maui. (A bit more bragging:) I remember I was doing so well, in October of that year, that the president of the bank came all the way out to tiny Whitestone to meet me in person. It didn’t hurt that, back then, people were looking to throw their money into the markets hand over fist.

In 2003 I founded McKeever Wealth Management and have been here since; for me this will be the last stop. I think I always knew I was going to be in business for myself. My parents raised me to be an independent thinker and I’ve always been one. My dad used to always tell my brother and I, “there’s nothing better than being in business for yourself and being your own boss.” I can honestly say he’s right.

Away from the business

the original battleaxeI’ve always enjoyed playing competitive sports, including soccer, tennis, basketball and track. Sports and athletics have always been a big part of my life. After high school, I was good enough to earn a full tennis scholarship to Manhattan College, a Division I school. I played #1 singles there for all four years and went on to play quasi-professionally for nearly 2 years after school.

I lived in Europe for most of that time, spending alot of time living in England, France, Germany and Spain. I played prize money tournaments and satellites all over Europe, the US and Mexico. I’ve been to New Zealand and Australia (twice) to visit my brother and tennis friends, who were living there at the time.

To this day, I love to travel and this year I am planning a trip to South America slated for around Christmas time. I have been to China and would love to go to India and Africa in the next couple years.

I live and work in Douglaston NY, not far from where I grew up and where my parents still live. Douglaston is a lovely suburban little town on the North Shore of Queens… best known as the home of tennis great John McEnroe. Speaking of which, I still play a fair bit of tennis and since I meet the age requirement, I plan on playing some Mens 35 tournaments soon.

I’m not married, although I’ve had a few close calls in the past 6 years… consequently, new idols include George Clooney, Vince Vaughn and Matt McConaughey…

Since starting my own blog, I’ve become an avid reader of other blogs and will probably put some links up soon.
